Blood oranges- Five reasons you should be eating them

Niamh Browne January 2, 2018

Sweetness- Blood oranges are sweeter than regular oranges & tend to contain less bitterness & acidity.

Polyphenols- Blood oranges contain some of these plant based chemicals which have a powerful antioxidant effect on the body.

Anthyocyanins- A good source of antioxidants. This is the compound which gives blood oranges the deep red pigment. Similar to the dark purple pigments in other antioxidant rich foods such as berries & grapes.

Vitamin C- We all need extra at this time of year to help fight colds & infections. It is also useful for the absorption of iron,

Folic acid- An important nutrient for pregnant women or those contemplating pregnancy as it helps prevent neural tube defects.

Also lets be honest they are pretty easy on the eye & versatile too. Check out my Banana and Coconut Pancakes With Blood Oranges and my Blood Orange Spelt Sponge
